The Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa’s only nuclear power plant, began commercial operation in February 1975. Located in Palo, Iowa, about 9 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids, it was built in a low-seismic-risk area near the Cedar River and designed to withstand major flooding. After a derecho in August 2020 caused severe damage to its cooling towers, the 615-MW facility was retired earlier than its planned date in 2025. Originally licensed to operate until 2034, the plant is now undergoing decommissioning under the NRC’s SAFSTOR method. Courtesy: NextEra Energy

In September 2024, the Department of Energy finalized a $1.52 billion loan guarantee to Holtec Palisades LLC to support the restoration and recommissioning of the 800-MW Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert Township, Michigan. Originally shut down in May 2022, the plant is set to return to service and operate until at least 2051, pending U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approvals. It could mark the first-ever recommissioning of a retired nuclear power plant in U.S. history. Source: DOE
