On June 16, 2025, Georgia Power and Mitsubishi Power announced the successful completion of a landmark demonstration at Plant McDonough-Atkinson in Smyrna, Georgia—marking the world’s largest hydrogen blending test to date on an advanced-class gas turbine. The 50% hydrogen blend trial, conducted on an M501GAC turbine, achieved a 22% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to 100% natural gas operation, advancing real-world validation of hydrogen co-firing for utility-scale decarbonization. And it’s a key strategy to support decarbonization across sectors. Depending on the generation mix providing the electrons, the amount of decarbonization may vary. But wherever a customer has electrified their energy usage, they stand to benefit from future deployments of clean generation resources.
